YAKU! YAKU! YAKU!

To go out in mahjong, your hand must be worth at least 1 Yaku. You cannot go out if you do not meet this requirement. You can obtain a Yaku or Yakus from certain situations, certain tile combinations, or from special hands.

Here's the layout of how each condition will be described:

Japanese Name English Name/Description Concealed or Revealed Yaku Worth
Long Description and Example, if necessary

By Concealed, I mean that the entire hand must be concealed in order for it to qualify for that certain Yaku condition. By Revealed, I mean that the hand can have revealed sets within it and still qualify for that certain Yaku condition.

You receive Yakus for each and every condition that you meet below. Certain hands may fulfill only one of these conditions while others may fulfill several of these conditions. Each Yaku is worth 1 Fan. Each Fan you have doubles your base score. So basically the more you have, the better your score will be.

Fundamentally, you are scored for each condition you meet below. However there are exceptions to this rule. Sometimes if you meet one condition, it may invalidate you from receiving Yakus for another condition. For example, if you make a Yakuman hand, you are only scored for each Yakuman hand you make and not for anything else that is worth less than that.

* Kongs can be treated as Pons as well. For example: a hand of All Pons. If you have a hand containing 2 concealed Pons, 2 revealed Kongs and a pair, you will still receive the Yakus for having an All Pon hand. In this case, the Kongs were treated as Pons. However, if you have a hand of 4 concealed Kongs and a pair, you don't receive the Yakuman for All Pons, instead you receive Yakuman for All Kongs. Only when you have a hand of both Kongs and Pons can Kongs be treated as Pons when summing up Yakus.

* Going out by Ron makes the set completed revealed but the hand is still considered concealed if the Tenpai hand was entirely concealed before hand.

* Note that not all Yaku conditions may be included in some mahjong games. Yaku worth may also differ slightly from game to game.
